Optimus is a driverless vehicle service offering point-to-point transit and deliveries within geo-fenced communities such as campuses, retirement neighborhoods, office parks, and city centers. A simple ambition in a market where the technology is rarely simple, Optimus provides a safe and reliable service that integrates with and responds to the needs of individual communities.
Opti Ride is a React Native app that allows community-members to hail rides and schedule deliveries. Version 1 had just launched when I joined the team. Our challenge was to identify and improve the user experience while navigating the nuances of maintaining a high level of design quality that was expected by our community partners. Throughout my time at Optimus, I participated in several redesigns to address user experience needs and business goals, as well as worked with engineering and mapping teams to enable point-to-point directions and mapping within the app.

Concepts

Before embarking on a redesign of the app, we

CONCEPT 01: Singular Flow // CONCEPT 02: Calendar View
CONCEPT 03: Map-forward // CONCEPT 04: Magic Button

Defining the Flow

After that I proceeded with creating a flowchart showing how the app would be organized. Leadership wanted to focus on making the app more robust by changing the autonomous technology, so I made sure to discuss them and include them in the plan.

Wireframes

After we defined the flow and thus what screens we needed, I proceeded with creating the wireframes to explore the experience in more detail on a screen-by-screen level. The main focus was the trip booking flow which was the core of the experience.

Visual Exploration

Option 1: Playful Photography

Option 2: Calming Colors

Option 3: Unconventional and Clean

Final UI

After deciding to go with option 2, I proceeded to design the final screens. In order to create a sense that the app matched each community, we decided to create templated color styles that would allow us to customize the apps colors to match the branding from each partner community.
